World Arts Focus (Joe's Movement Emporium)
Mount Rainier, Maryland
Mount Rainier, Maryland, is located near Washington, DC and has a population of approximately 8,500 people. Mount Rainer and several partner towns and organizations created the Gateway Arts District to help revive a two-mile commercial corridor.
The not-for-profit Joe's Movement Emporium and the City of Mount Rainier, along with three other local organizations, will use an Our Town grant on Art Lives Here, a multifaceted community engagement initiative of public art projects and performances. Artists will be paired with downtown businesses to activate vacant storefronts with pop-up performances, interactive arts programming, and installations. Project activities also include a coordinated visibility campaign to promote downtown arts activities and efforts to lease blighted commercial spaces to new arts collaborations and enterprises. An estimated 300 artists, many from the Gateway Arts District, and businesses will participate in the 18-month-long Art Lives Here project.
