To support the presentation of an oratorio by Dave Brubeck,
Beloved Son, including educational activities. Under the
direction of Music Director Tom Hall, the performance will take
place in March 2003 on the campus of Morgan State University.

To support the development and production of a new theater work
about King Arthur, focusing on adoption. British playwright Charles
Way will be commissioned to write King Arthur, a work
targeted to young audiences.

To support a production of Friedrich Schiller's Mary
Stuart directed by Artistic Director Irene Lewis. This
reinvestigation of Schiller's 1799 work will be offered as part of
the 2002-03 subscription season.

To support a year-long residency project for a hip-hop dance
company with a history of working with inner-city youth. Rennie
Harris Puremovement will present Facing Mekka and will work
with low income teens to develop their own works.

To support the presentation and promotion of writers'
residencies and television interviews featuring nationally
recognized authors. Proposed authors include Julia Alvarez, Michael
Chabon, Billy Collins, Elizabeth Spires, Stanley Plumly, Reuben
Jackson, Henry Taylor, Paul Muldoon, Seamus Heaney and Michael
Collier.
National Council for the Traditional Arts
Silver Spring, MD

Arts

To support a series of touring concerts and accompanying
educational and outreach programs featuring traditional artists.
The tour is designed to create new ways for presenters to work
together to increase the effectiveness and reach of touring
programs and provide opportunities to reach new audiences.

To support the creation and production of Lewis Carroll's
Alice in Wonderland. This will be the first repertory piece
to premiere in The Puppet Co.'s new facility in Glen Echo Park,
Maryland.

To support the East Coast premiere production of When Grace
Comes In by Heather McDonald. Associate Artist Jane Beard
collaborated with McDonald during the development phases of the
script, and will play the principal role in the production.

To support artists' fees for a documentary radio series. A Day
in the Life of programs, produced by independent radio artists,
will capture 24 hours in the life of a subject and condense it into
a half hour documentary.

To support readings and workshops in rural towns in Maryland
and Virginia. Proposed visiting writers include Cynthia Ozick, Jane
Smiley, Stanley Plumly, Thomas Lux, E. Ethlebert Miller and Henry
Taylor.
